Advertising Poster Stamp

Advertising poster stamp for Anton Pichler, which was the successor to the company Josef Pichler & Sons, of Graz.
    According to Wikipedia:

Hat maker Josef Pichler (1824–1864) founded a hat maker 's shop in Hartberg (Styria). In 1857 he moved the business to Graz and in 1848 set up the hat factory Josef Pichler & Sons on Grieskai. He focused his attention on the production of Styrian loden hats for hunting and tourist purposes. As demand rose sharply, Pichler increasingly used machines in production. After his sons Josef and Anton gained experience in the millinery trade in Germany, France and the USA, they joined the company in 1880.

The company grew quickly. In the meantime, only loden hats were made. As far as the quality and taste of the forms were concerned, the factory achieved something almost inimitable. The hats were not only sold domestically, but also exported to Germany and Switzerland. The nobility were also among Pichler's customers. He was appointed Ducal Sachsen-Meiningen court hat manufacturer. Due to the high quality of the products, the company was awarded the Imperial Court title. The factory was now called kuk Hof-Hutfabrik.

The previous premises became increasingly inadequate, so that in 1879 a new building was erected at Körösistraße 1 in Graz. The facility corresponded to the most modern technical requirements of the time.

After the death of the partner Josef Pichler at the end of the 1890s, the company passed into the hands of his son Anton and younger son Josef Jr. Around 1900, the company was expanded again, as the existing buildings had again proved to be too small for the increasing business.

Despite the turmoil of the First World War and the collapse of the monarchy, the company continued to exist. In 1930, the 24-year-old chemical engineer Gustav Scherbaum (1906–1991) from Vienna was placed by the Vienna employment office as a dyeing technician at the Pichler company. He was later elected mayor of the city of Graz.

During the Second World War, the company produced tropical helmets for the Wehrmacht, which needed them in the African campaign.

After 35+ years I decided to retire from being an active Cinderella Stamp dealer. Most of my working inventory plus backup stock was sold at public auction. However, I have retained some material that I will be offering for sale. In addition, I have some "new" material that was mixed into lots I have bought for my own collections. I will be listing some of the material in my eBay store at fixed prices. I will also be offering some material at auction, either as single items or mixed lots. There will be many bargains available. There will be large and small lots, some containing similar material, some containing a random mixture, and some containing only one or a few items. The condition will be mixed, but none of the lots will be just accumulations of damaged or faulty stamps (unless specifically listed as such).

Items in stockpage or larger lots may be removed and repackaged into glassines to save on shipping costs.

A Note about Poster Stamps and Gum: Because many poster stamp collectors are primarily interested in the image on the stamp, the absence or presence of gum on the back is of little concern. If no mention of gum is made, then there may or may not be gum present. If you are only interested in poster stamps with original gum, please inquire before bidding. Actual condition issues (that are not apparent from the scan) WILL be described.

A Note about "Stock Images": Occasionally I will have more than one example of an item in inventory. Rather than scan each one individually, I may use the same image for multiple examples of the item. If that is the case, the item supplied will be in substantially the same, or better, condition than the image. Any such items will have the words: "STOCK IMAGE" at the end of the description.
