SHOU K'OU  ORNAMENT, "Spheres-Within-Spheres"

(with swirling Oriental Dragon-like motifs.) 

Finished wooden ornament is 5.5" long x 3" wide on a 3" red hanging cord.

Pre-owned by adult collector. VG+ to excellent condition. This is a mass market craft item, unsigned. Carved in unfinished light wood.

This ornament actually contains SEVEN SPHERES...2 carved inside the smaller Top Orb, and 3 carved inside the Bottom Orb. All of these concentric spheres rotate freely inside one another and are carved from a single piece of wood, using hand drills and precision carving tools. The large and small orbs are then joined together with glue, and sometimes placed upon a pedestal base. This version is free-hanging.

The inner spheres can be fully rotated with a sharpened pencil, or any very thin tool.

Intricate dynamic designs, somewhat suggestive of biomorphic forms...dorsal dragon spines, opulent coral beds, swishing koi tails are all evoked--amid geometric background patterns.

Intricate Chinese IVORY globe carvings such as these can cost hundreds--even thousands--of dollars. The same design in wood is more affordable to Collectors of more modest means.
