Here we have an absolutely fantastic mid century modern ceiling light. This was purchased recently from Finland - I saw it and just had to have it! This was designed by Erik Hoglund who was one of the most influential Swedish glass designers of the 20th century. I have taken the time to read about Erik and his story is very fascinating - so if you have time to spare it may be worth reading up about him.

Briefly, he worked for Kosta Boda from 1953-73, starting as an apprentice at the age of 21, where the world of glass was a complete unknown to him. He tirelessly worked to learn his trade, working through the night not to disturb anyone at the glass furnace. After one year the Swedish National Museum found Erik's work sufficiently interesting to purchase several pieces for a big exhibition devoted to Swedish glass. This was a stark contrast to the Swedish retail market where the shops had never seen anything like it and the sales manager even complained to Kosta Boda saying it was "impossible to sell". The director allowed Erik to continue with his vision stating "I don't understand what you're doing but it is just as well you continue until you succeed". When leading stores refused to exhibit his work, Erik arranged his own exhibitions in small galleries in Stockholm. In 1957 he won possibly the most prestigious design award in the world, the Danish Lunning Prize. Soon after, his sales rocketed and he was common place in homes across Scandinavia. After 10 years working at Kosta Boda he his work had really spread across the globe and he was known as a "wonder boy" in the USA as everything he touched seemed to turn to gold.

This gorgeous piece would have been made during the 60's. It has original wiring from Scandinavia so will need rewiring in order to use here in the UK. This is a solid piece, made of a polished brass frame I believe which has 4 glass inset panels. The glass panels are typical of Erik's work, smooth, chunky glass with a swirled design. 2 of the panels are a dark tone whilst the other 2 are a ruby red colour which has a bright yellow swirl, it's actually difficult to see this unless in direct sunlight, I expect this would be more visible when lit. This is a perfect piece for a space age, 60's/70's, mid century modern or Scandinavian inspired home! This measures approximately 8 inches by 8 inches by 5.5 inches and hangs a further 20.25 inches with chain and ceiling hook/cover. This weighs slightly over 2.75kg's. This is the only one on eBay of course so get it while you can. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.
