A first survey of Corsica was made by frigate captain Hell from 1820 to 1824, without the help of hydrographic engineers.
Its survey is based on the triangulation carried out by the geographical engineers in 1791 and on their cadastral maps. The map of Corsica was published in 1831. It incorporates topographic detail of the coastline from a map published in 1824 by the War Depot.
Following the grounding of a steamer and the reporting of numerous dangers not appearing on the 1831 chart, a new partial survey was carried out in 1884. The 1820 signals having disappeared and the topography having to be redone, the decision was made to redo a complete survey. It is carried out by a hydrographic engineer assisted by sub-engineers and students, from 1884 to 1891
