The photo shows Shatareva Alla Alekseevna, a military paramedic of the 203rd separate penal company, holder of the Order of the Red Banner.

Awarded for the fact that during the hostilities near the village of Krymskaya, during the offensive of the penal company, being under artillery fire, she provided medical assistance to 55 wounded and quickly evacuated them from the battlefield to the hospital along with personal weapons.

Penal companies are military units to which military personnel who committed crimes in wartime were sent as punishment (except for serious crimes for which the death penalty was due).

Penal units existed in the Red Army from July 25, 1942 to June 6, 1945; they were sent to the most difficult sections of the fronts in order to give the penalized the opportunity to “redeem their guilt before the Motherland with blood”; at the same time, large losses in personnel were inevitable.
