Prometheus® Clay is a claylike material which turns into pure, solid copper or bronze when fired in a kiln. It is a mixture of micron sized metal powder, water and organic binder. It can be formed by hand, rolled into a sheet or a rope. It can be molded, textured, even turned on a potter's wheel. Prometheus® Clay can be fired with most lab-created gemstones (cubic zirconias), pre-tested natural stones, glass beads, ceramic and porcelain.
When the clay is fired in a kiln, the organic binder evaporates and burns away and you’re left with pure, solid copper or bronze. Brush it, if needed pickle it to remove any firescale and finally polish.
You can create unique jewellery, ornaments, hollow ware, statutes, sculptures and many other decorative objects. Anything you create with Prometheus® Clay is a piece of art. Combine it with your imagination and let your fingers do the rest!
Rapid and Low Fire Check
Carbon Firing
Step 1 - Place dried piece on stainless steel mesh and put in cold kin and raise to 500°C. Fire for 15 minutes then remove onto fire proof surface until cooled
Step 2 - Preheat kiln to 820°C. Put approx. 3cm activated carbon in bottom of a steel container. Place piece in with at least 1.5cm space between pieces and fill remained with more activated carbon. Fire in kiln for 60 minutes then remove container onto fire proof surface until cooled then remove finished pieces
Open Shelf Firing
Step 1 - Preheat kiln to 820°C. Place dried piece onto stainless steel mesh and put in kiln. Once kiln reaches 820°C again, fire for 30 minutes
Step 2 - When fired, take out piece and place on heat proof surface and wait to cool. Alternatively, quench finished piece in water while hot to remove fire scale. To remove remaining fire scale, leave in hot pickling solution then rinse with water
Torch Firing
Step 1 - Place dried piece on stainless steel mesh on top of a soldering block
Step 2 - Start heating slowly until you produce a flame like candle and smoke which indicates the binder is burning. Once flame and smoke disperse, heat on full power up to orange-red colour and fire for at least 5-10minutes, ensuring you keep the orange-red colour
Step 3 - When fired wait to cool. Alternatively, quench finished piece in water while hot to remove fire scale. To remove remaining fire scale, leave in hot pickling solution then rinse with water
