Milanie Dahan transforms, without nostalgia, beautiful French songs into jazz standards. From "Le Petit Bal Perdu" to "La Princesse et les Croque-Notes", her unique voice gives rebirth to these refrains. Indeed, she gives a new soul to some famous or unknown texts from Brassens (from whom she borrows almost word-for-word the title of her album), Dimey, Nougaro, Aznavour and she even dares to cover Ferri!

REVIEW
Melanie Dahan has been performing since age 11 but didn't fathom a career in jazz until about a decade ago when, in her early 20s, she became intoxicated by Ella Fitzgerald's Grammy-winning masterpiece Mack the Knife: Ella in Berlin. Study at the Sorbonne and with Sara Lazarus and Michele Hendricks followed, then Paris club dates. But the real impetus needed to move her jazz ambitions forward came in 2006 when she found herself teamed with celebrated pianist Giovanni Mirabassi for a tribute to legendary lyricist Bernard Dimey. That project served as the foundation for La Princesse et les Croque-Notes, with the focus expanded to also embrace such fellow icons of the post-World War II chansonniers era as Charles Aznavour, Georges Brassens, Leo Ferre, Pierre Barouh and Francis Lai.

Drawing on her theatrical seasoning, Dahan is a natural storyteller with a crystalline alto that hints at the lilt of Stacey Kent (herself no stranger to Gallic influences). But it is Mirabassi, a brilliant pupil of the McCoy Tyner school, who drives the album, shaping each of these classic French tales into a true jazz standard. Mirabassi and Dahan achieve the same sort of seamless simpatico that Tyner shared with Coltrane. The results are, understandably, dazzling.
