RARE Antique BYRON GALLERY "Bride Of Abydos" Blue & Black Transferware Dinner Plates by an Unknown Maker. I have three plates available and these are priced per plate, not priced as a set. The Byron Gallery is a series depicting scenes and characters from Lord Byron’s works, made by the partnerships of Goodwins & Harris and Goodwin, Harris & Goodwin of Lane End and an Unknown Maker. The plates available in this listing are part of the two-colored “Byron Gallery” series from the Unknown Maker. Their production is believed to be circa 1835. This series by an unknown maker, depicts scenes or characters from works by Byron. The central scenes appear within a narrow ornate frame, then a simple sheet geometric border with an outer band of stringing. The printed backstamp mark has the series title on a scroll over a lyre with the individual title in script beneath. The series is found on dinner wares, usually printed in two colours with a black or brown centre within a blue or green border, although plain blue has also been noted. The scene of these “Bride of Abydos” Dinner plates, which measure 10-1/2 inches, are of a scene from Lord Byron's poem Bride of Abydos. Abydos is an ancient town of Phrygia, Asia Minor, on the Asian side of the Hellespont opposite Sestos, in present-day Turkey. It was the setting for the story of Hero and Leander. This is one of a series of scenes that go to make-up this pattern Byron Gallery produced by the unknown maker. Goodwins & Harris produced a similar pattern and both were inspired by The Byron Gallery, a book of engravings depicting scenes from Byron's poetic works, first published in 1832 and re-issued at least twice in 1838 and 1844. Backstamp: Black printed cartouche with BYRON GALLERY within and Bride of Abydos beneath. Condition: Excellent condition for their age. The glaze is shiny but all have fine crazing, which is expected for this antique English Ironstone. Two of the plates have minor chips to their soles, but there are no other chips, cracks or repairs to any of the plates. See photos.
