A
prolifically recorded conductor, Krips led the Wiener Volksoper and
Staatsoper orchestras prior to World
War II and was the Generalmusikdirektor prior to 1933. He conducted in Belgrade
for a year after the Anschluss and worked in a food factory there during the
War. He returned to Vienna and the
Staatsoper after the War. He left Vienna
in 1950 to assume the Principal Conductor post with the London Symphony Orchestra
and from 1954-1963 he was Music Director of the Buffalo Philharmonic, often
conducting at the Metropolitan Opera during the Bing regime. He left Buffalo to
lead the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra until 1970, when he accepted the post
of Generalmusikdirektor of the Deutsche Oper Berlin where he remained until
1973.
