Diamonds with less color also let more light through, giving it that fiery quality thus increasing its brilliance. A diamond is like a prism, it splits light into flashes of colour, and this property is known as dispersion. The color in a diamond removes the spectrum of color (fire) that is emitted and acts as a filter.

That is why diamonds that have a higher color grade, that is, those with less color, show a more colorful fire. However, most diamonds have a yellow or brown tint due to traces of nitrogen when the diamond was being formed and are therefore less than perfect color grade.
