and football fans alike as the greatest footballer of all times, this headline says it all:

"How do you spell Pele ? G-O-D" The Times, June 22nd 1970.

With 1000 goals under is belt, being the youngest player to win the World Cup three times, it is hard to dispute that!

He was just 15 when he made his senior team debut for Santos, scoring as a substitute. In his first league game for Santos he scored four goals. By the end of the next season, he'd firmly established himself in the first team and was São Paulo's state top goal scorer with 32 goals under his belt! Pele stayed with Santos for nearly two decades after he was made a national treasure which prevented him leaving Brazil.

Pele made his first international debut in 1957, but it was at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden that the virtually unknown 17 year old delighted the world. Brazil went on to beat hosts Sweden 5-2 in the final with Pele scoring twice. He scored 77 goals in 92 appearances for his national team.

Little Book

Brazil player by player

The Brazilian football team is believed to have played it's first official match in 1914 against English club side Exeter City, which they won 2-0. Their first full international was against Argentina the same year. Since then they have become the most successful international football team in history.

' The English invented it, the Brazilians perfected it' is a phrase often heard in Brazil and the side has backed this up by winning the FIFA World Cup a record five times.

Re-live the glory days of 1958,1962 and 1970 when the Brazilian team was arguably the best the sport has produced. Check on the glittering careers of Rivaldo and Bebeto in the 1990's and wonder at the magic of the latest players to make it to the world stage like Neymar, Daniel Alves and Adriano.

More than 500 footballers have the coveted yellow Brazilian shirt, from Pele to Gilmar, Dunga to Zico and Ronaldo to Kaka. This book provides detailed information on the Top 100, with each entry including fascinating statistics, career highs and lows and a brief biography of the finest footballers to have graced the game.
