This is a Vactrol style optocoupler or optoisolator as used in tremolo/vibrato circuits in many guitar pedals and amplifiers, where the LED on one side of the package may be driven with a varying DC or AC voltage/current via a suitable series resistor and the will vary the resistance of the photoresistor on the other side of the package from approx 1 Megohm max when the LED is off, to around 800 Ohms when on (10mA drive to LED). May be used to control high voltage circuits from a low voltage source safely, with a peak isolation voltage of over 1000V. 500uS rise time.

These are aftermarket parts of no specific brand and note that the rise / fall times of these devices are too slow to pass audio signals or digital signals such as MIDI, but are ideal for more slowly moving control signals.



The LED is the side with shorter leads (longest lead is Anode / positive supply via resistor).
