Description:

Witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) is native to North America and Canada and belongs to the plant family Hamamelidaceae. The name witch in witch-hazel has its origins in Middle English wiche, from the Old English wice, meaning "pliant" or "bendable", and is not related to the word witch meaning a practitioner of magic. The first Puritan settlers in New England adopted this medicine from the natives and its use became widely established in the United States. Historically witch hazel was used originally as a herb by the Indian tribes of North America. It is a small, deciduous tree or shrub usually reaching up to 6 meters (rarely up to 10 meters), often with a dense cluster of stems from its base. Its bark is light brown, smooth, scaly, while the inner bark is reddish purple. Its branches are initially pubescent, later smooth, light orange-brown in color, possibly with white dots, and finally dark or reddish brown. The buds of the foliage are sharp, fluffy with a light brown color. The bark as well as the leaves of the flowering plant are used in skin care.

Making tea: Add 2 grams of the leaves in a cup of boiled water for 10-15 minutes.Strain and drink up to 3 times a day between meals.

Remember: Herbs are not a substitute for medicine. For their best and safe use it is better to consult your doctor.
