The 1987 Winston 500 was held at Alabama International Motor Speedway in Talladega, Alabama, on May 3rd.  It's not an exaggeration to say this race changed everything.

It started in qualifying. This was the fastest field in NASCAR history, with Bill Elliott setting a qualifying record of 212.809 mph.  Only one car failed to qualify over 200 mph.

On lap 21, Bobby Allison cut a tire, and the car went airborne into the catch fence on the front stretch.  While a few fans were injured, it was deemed fortunate from what could have been.  NASCAR would slow the cars down going forward, never approaching the speeds of over 35 years ago.

While Elliott started on the pole, it was rookie Davey Allison who would dominate the race. In only his 14th start, Allison would lead 101 of the 178 scheduled laps and win his first Cup race in the Ranier-Lundy #28.

The race was red flagged for 2 hours and 38 minutes due to his father's accident.  Because of this, the race was shortened by 10 laps due to darkness.

Following Allison to the line were Terry Labonte, Kyle Petty, Dale Earnhardt and Bobby Hillin, Jr.
