Antique Large Tin Nicho Icon with Infant of Prague, Mexican Folk Art, El Santo Nino de Atocha, Vintage Religious Folk Art Retablo

Approximately 12 1/4 inches by 9 3/4 inches by 1 inch deep.

Tin is bent and has overall rusting, scuffs, scratches and wear. Print has soiling, tears, holes, wrinkles and multiple stains.

Fabulous piece of old Mexican folk art history.  It is a "retabalo - a religious altar which was displayed both inside, and outside. All kinds of things were often displayed with these altar pieces; it came from a small church.  It was probably convent made.

Holy Infant of Atocha or Santo Niño de Atocha is a Roman Catholic image of the Christ Child popular among the Hispanic cultures of Spain, Latin America and the southwestern United States. It is distinctly characterized by a basket he carries, along with a staff, drinking gourd (He used the gourd to carry water, and a basket of bread that he fed to prisoners who were thirsty and hungry) and a cape to which is affixed a scallop shell, symbol of a pilgrimage to Saint James.

Purchased in an antiques shop in Mexico City.   Such a beautiful, religious piece.
