Withania Somnifera, known as Ashwagandha or Winter Cherry is one of the most important herbs in Ayurvedic and is an evergreen shrub of the Solanaceae or nightshade family that grows in India, the Middle East and parts of Africa. Several other species in the genus Withania are morphologically similar.
The Latin species name somnifera means "hypnotist". The name 'ashwagandha' is a combination of the Sanskrit words 'ashva', meaning horse, and 'gandha', meaning smell, implying that the root has a strong horse-like smell.Ashwagandha is called Indian ginseng.
This species is a short, tender shrub with a height of 35–75 cm. Tomentose branches extend radially from a central stem. The leaves are dull green, elliptic, usually up to 10-12 cm long. The flowers are small, green and bell-shaped. Ripe fruit is orange-red.
