Larry Coryell was one of the acknowledged innovators in Jazz; Kenny Drew, Jr. was recognized as one of the supreme pianists playing the music. DUALITY is a fitting addition to their collective legacies. Their selfless, inventive interplay on the recording epitomizes the best in duo playing. Continuing and expanding the grand tradition of Guitar/Piano partnerships demonstrated by Joe Pass/Oscar Peterson and Jim Hall/Bill Evans, Coryell/Drew stretch the genre to heights of new verve and elegance. Each artist contributes three original tunes. Coryell penned the complex burner Szabodar, the chamber jazz piece Oil and Water, and the guitar-overdubbed concerto Duality: Nenads Sonata. Drew provided the lilting Farmers Waltz, the ominous ballad A Silent War, and his tribute to a recently departed fellow piano giant, Goodbye Mr. Jones. Jazz composers are represented by Horace Silvers swinging Silvers Serenade, Charles Mingus blues Nostalgia In Times Square and Bobby Timmons popular minor opus Moanin. Played in a Latin mode, the standard The Night Has A Thousand Eyes completes the set. The two master musicians obviously inspire one another. They manage to sound like a big band at times, playing deftly arranged lines on Moanin, a classical duo on Larrys idiomatic Oil And Water, and swinging virtuosos on everything. DUALITY is a feast for the head and the heart, for the mind and the soul. Both sublime and accessible, it is a gift from two musical wizards. The CD includes a behind-the-scenes making of video, made all the more poignant by the untimely passing of Kenny Drew, Jr. at the age of 56 (2014) and the passing of Larry Coryell in 2017 at the age of 73.
