G.P. Putnam's Sons, New York, 1960. Hardcover in Dust Jacket. Written by Lawrence Langner. First Edition (NAP). The signed inscription is on the half-title page. It reads: ' To John Fuller with all good wishes from Lawrence Langner.'
From the dust jacket: 'For anyone who has ever been stage-struck, even in the slightest degree (for the affliction is incurable), this informative new book raises the curtain on the world behind the world of make-believe. On one level the book is an intimate, informal record of some of the most memorable productions of the past 40 years. No one else in the theater has worked with as many great men of the theater as Mr. Langner. His book contains recollections of George Bernard Shaw, Eugene O'Neill, Robert Sherwood, Philip Barry, Maxwell Anderson, and other memorable names-- playwrights, actors, designers-- and provides first-hand insights into the working methods, the quirks, the peculiar genius of each. Mr. Langner has been involved in the presentation of 18 plays by Bernard Shaw, and he worked with Eugene O'Neill on the production of ten of his plays. Among the other important American playwrights with whom he has worked are S. N. Behrman, Sidney Howard, William Saroyan, William Inge, Elmer Rice, Ben Hecht and Tennessee Williams.
Mr. Langner was a playwright, author and producer. He was the founder of the Theatre Guild and of the American Shakespeare Festival Theatre and Academy. He was awarded the 1958 Tony Award for best play production (together with his wife and partners, Theresa Helburn and Dore Schary) for Sunrise at Campobello.
'John Grant Fuller, Jr. was a New England-based American author of several nonfiction books and newspaper articles, mainly focusing on the theme of extraterrestrials and the supernatural. For many years he wrote a regular column for the Saturday Review magazine, called 'Trade Winds'. His books include We Almost Lost Detroit, The Ghost of Flight 401, Incident at Exeter, and The Interrupted Journey.' A plug: I have a number of John G. Fuller's books for sale. They are all signed by him.
