Karel Miloslav Kuttelwascher, nicknamed Kut, was a Czech fighter pilot who first served in the French Air Force until Germany occupied the country and then began serving with the RAF during World War II. At the RAF at Tangmere, No. 1 Squadron was tasked with the night intrusion over France. Painted black and without radar, these flights only took place on nights with a full moon. During 1942 Kuttelwascher shot down 15 aircraft and damaged 5. He was the most successful Czechoslovak pilot in the RAF with 18 victories and was awarded the DFC and BAR.
