The witch on a broomstick symbology has its roots in pagan fertility rituals. Farmers would leap and dance abreast poles, pitchforks or brooms on a full moon to spur on growth of their crops.

People use Besoms and Broomsticks for protection of their ritual area or ritual tools. 

The first known representation of a witch on a broomstick was in the 15th century in the book Le Champion des Dames (The Defender of Ladies) by the poet Martin Le Franc. One with is seen flying on a stick, the other on a broom. 

The broom is a phallic symbol and of feminine sexuality and of a woman's home life transforming to being primitive and non domesticated. The broomstick between a woman's legs is both a sexual and spiritual.
