Marcel Breuer's Story
Marcel Lajos Breuer was a Hungarian-American modernist
architect and furniture designer, known for the Wassily
Chair and the Cesca Chair, which The New York Times have
called some of the most important chairs of the 20th
century.
His work includes art museums, libraries, college
buildings, office buildings, and residences, among which
are:
New York's Whitney Museum of American Art (1966)
IBM Research Center in La Gaude, France (1961)
U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development
in Washington, D.C. (1963–1968)
UNESCO
Headquarters in Paris (1958)
He is regarded as one of the great innovators of modern
furniture design and one of the most-influential figure
in "internationalism" – a major architectural style
dominant until the 1970s.
Cesca Chair
Marcel Breuer created the Cesca Chair shortly after
leaving the Bauhaus in 1928 and named it after his
adopted daughter Francesca. The chair consists of a
tubular steel frame, rattan seat and backrest and
inherently tied to the material innovation and design
principles he formed at the German design school.
While designing the chair, Breuer found inspiration in
the tubular steel construction of a bicycle.

made me interested in polished metal, in shiny
and impeccable lines in space as new components
for our interiors. I considered such polished
and curved lines not only symbolic of our modern
technology, but actually technology itself."

The Cesca chair was the first tubular-steel-frame,
caned-seat chair to be mass-produced. Now, the chair is
considered as one of "the 10 most important chairs of
the 20th century".

This is my 6th Cesca chair from them and I couldn't be happier. Great looking but tips forward
Great looking chair and straight forward to assemble. The only reason I gave it 2 stars is it tips if you sit forward or lean forward. I'm using them as dining chairs so no one in my family wants to sit in them! I saw a version of this chair at Scandanavian Design that includes bumpers for the front part of the leg to prevent tipping and wish these ones came with that.

Beautiful classic Breuer chair. The walnut is great quality as is the finish. Caning is tight. We purchased this chair for a desk area in the entry to our apartment - it would be occasionally used as a desk chair but more for a quick place to sit to remove or put on shoes. It's lightweight and easily pulls out from under the desk. Even though it is lightweight it is extremely sturdy. It was pretty straightforward to put together. Packaged well too.

So chic. Adds a fun, retro touch to an otherwise classical space. Looks fresh paired with other traditional, grandma style pieces. Reads as thoughtfully collected, and effortlessly sophisticated. The walnut is a unexpectedly cool. You usually see these in honey oak or black lacquer. Both of which are nice. But the walnut looks rare.
