What Do We Think

This is a lively, no-frills mahogany neck & body guitar. All the tone and plenty of straight-forward charm. The mahogany body has a natural bite, and the wraparound bridge gives a great amount of sustain along with a slinky tension on the strings that feels very nice under the fingers.

The Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge is a great pairing for this instrument. It has plenty of output to make your amp sing, pushing most into punchy compression with a nice, tight chug on the bottom. But far from being a one-trick pony, it has remarkable dynamic range and harmonic content. It maintains perfect clarity as it “cleans up,” allowing you to use the guitar’s volume knob as the gain gateway of your amp.

The neck position is precise without sacrificing warmth, allowing for a wide range of applications. And it really brings out that dry vowel in the mahogany. A sustained chord is impressively clear, while single notes have good body supporting an articulate attack. Switch to the middle position to hear both pickups in all their glory; the mix is sparkling with overtones and a beautifully brilliant attack.

 

How Does It Play

The guitar sets up with string action measuring just 4/64” on the low E string at the 12^th fret, and even lower on the high E. There is no fretbuzz. The Knaggs “Slight V” neck is exactly that… think a nice round C with just a hair taken off the shoulders as you approach the nut. You probably won’t even think of it as a V, but it makes that cowboy chord area really comfy and transitions effortlessly into a supportive C moving up the neck.
