Plate 42: 'Turksch Keizerrijk. Keizerlijke Orde van de Halve Maan - Orde van Nichen Istehar of van Verdienste.' (Turkish Empire. Order of the Crescent - Order of Glory). The Imperial Order of the Crescent was a chivalric order of the Ottoman Empire. It was instituted in 1799 by Sultan Selim III when he wished to reward Horatio Nelson, an Anglican Christian, for his victory at the Battle of the Nile. The Order of Glory was an order of the Ottoman Empire founded 19 August 1831 by Sultan Mahmud II.
