Essentially an upgrade to the earlier LaGG-1 prototype, the Lavochkin-Gorbunov-Gudkov LaGG-3 was the most advanced fighter in the Soviet air force at the time of the German invasion. The plane was built mostly of wood, and it was easily outclassed by its main opponent, the Messerschmitt Bf 109, leading to its nickname as the “varnished guaranteed coffin”. Throughout the airplane’s life, many efforts were made to improve the design. 66 different versions were ultimately created, and more than 6,000 LaGG-3s were built.

Despite excellent armament for the time—a 20mm ShVAK autocannon and a pair of 7.62mm machineguns—and sturdy construction that could take a good deal of punishment, the LaGG was unpopular with pilots. Complaints about the design included maintenance issues and poor maneuverability and speed. But that did not prevent excellent pilots like G.I. Grigor’yev from attaining “ace” status.
