A common issue with BMW cars equipped with "M" series engines is associated with an unappealing characteristic - the breakdown of the oil cup valve's integrity. After a short period of time, wear occurs within the housing, causing the sealing component to become misaligned, allowing oil to drain into the oil pan. As a result, engine start-up is accompanied by an unpleasant clattering noise, valve lifters' and chain's noise, and a red oil warning light on the instrument panel.

Ignoring this fact is unwise, as the oil cup valve in BMW M50, M52, M52TU, M54 engines serves a non-secondary role; its primary function is to keep the cup full during engine idling, preventing oil from draining out of the oil filter cavity. Otherwise, premature engine wear is guaranteed, accompanied by distinct tapping noises.

Often, the oil cup valve for BMW M50, M52, M52TU, M54 engines can only be acquired as part of the oil filter housing assembly, with a cost of around 200 USD, necessitating a straightforward replacement of the shut-off valve.

Before replacing the valve, make sure that these issues are absent or resolved, as valve replacement won't be effective if:

• Gasket rings on the filter housing are worn out (damaged or have become "wooden" due to age)
• Oil pickup is clogged or there is a suction issue in connection with the oil pump
• Connecting rod and crankshaft assembly is worn (bearing shells, crankshaft)
• Oil pump is worn
• Engine mileage does not match the oil used, or low-quality oil with extended change intervals is used.

After receiving the valve, check its seal:

• Check the thread tightening by hand
• Apply a light coat of oil to the valve seating surfaces to create an oil film at the junction
• Place the valve on a sheet of paper and fill it with oil.

1. If the paper remains dry after 10 hours, the valve can be installed.
2. If the paper is oily, lapping of the seating surfaces is required.

• Disassemble the valve, clean it from oil, apply a small amount of cylinder head valve lapping paste, lap the valve stem to the seating surface with rotating movements. Rinse the valve.
• Repeat the seal check.

Installation instructions:

• Remove the old valve using extractors
• Clean the seating hole from dust and oil residues
• Press in the new valve until the seating surfaces match, avoiding any tilting (Note: Pressing in more than 1 mm deeper than the seating surface can lead to valve jamming)
• After valve replacement, the oil filter gasket also needs to be replaced.

Before installation, it is necessary to lap the valve with lapping paste, just like with all new valves!
