  • Beschreibung: 2 Pifferaris ziehen durch die Straßen Roms. So wurden die Hirten aus der Capagna geanntn, die um die Weihnachtszeit nach Rom kamen und dort vor den Marien-Bildern musizierten. Sie waren ein fester Bestandteil des römischen Volkslebens, sind oft beschrieben und bildlich festgehalten worden.

  • Inscription: Lower right signed in the printing plate: "A.H. Payne sc". Lower middle inscribed in the printing plate: "Pifferari im Rom".

  • Date: c. 1850

  • Description: 2 Pifferaris parade through the streets of Rome. This was the name given to the shepherds from Capagna who came to Rome around Christmas time and played music in front of the images of the Virgin Mary. They were an integral part of Roman folk life and have often been described and pictured.
