This antique trademark lightning fruit jar is a rare find for collectors. With a beautiful aqua color and quart volume, this jar is perfect for display and storage. The bottle type is a fruit jar and it was manufactured in the United States between 1882 and 1896. The body is embossed with a slightly arched “TRADE MARK” and “LIGHTNING” which indicates it was made earlier than the Lightning jars that also included the “Registered US Patent Office” embossing which was added after the patent was to expire in 1896. The patent actually pertained to the wire bale closure that Putnam obtained in 1882. When the patent was due to expire in 1896, Putnam apparently added the “Registered…” embossing in an attempt to imply protection of the jar, itself, even though the jar and closure were actually public domain by that time. The bottom is embossed “Putnam 354.” The jar was made utilizing a mouth blown mode and has the crude features of early jars such as the stone ground lip, thick side seams, bubbles and some obvious whittling. Measures 7.75”H with lid x 3.75” base diameter. The condition is very good with no breakage, chips or cracks in the jar, and one very tiny chip on the underside rim of the lid (see last photo). The darker little rim spot appears to be an impurity in the glass. Please review all photos as they are part of the description. This jar is a perfect addition to any antique bottle collection and especially for those who collect the early fruit canning jars.
