Metal and black resin Fair trade earrings formed into a "teardrop" shaped drop with inlaid abalone shell (Mother of Pearl) floral shapes.

•   Abalone shell shimmers beautifully when worn, creating a rather glamourous effect.

•   The back of the earrings is a plain silver Alpaca metal, which is an alloy made from a mixture of zinc, copper and nickel.

•   Stamped on the back with "ALPACA MEXICO" for added authenticity.
It behaves like silver and can be polished in the same way.

•   The hooks are made from silver plated metal which is nickel-free and therefore hypoallergenic.

These shell earrings have been created in small workshops in Taxco, in the state of Guerrero, Mexico - an important centre of jewellery making since colonial times.

DIMENSIONS - the drop from the base of the hook is 4.0 cm  x  width 1.5 cm approximately.

Abalone is a common name for a group of edible sea snails. 
The thick inner layer of the shell is composed of nacre (mother-of-pearl), which in many species is highly iridescent, giving rise to a range of strong changeable colours. 

This makes the shells attractive to us as decorative objects, jewellery, and as a source of colourful mother-of-pearl.
