Italian Line - Gala Night! The highlight of many a voyage. And the souvenir always kept by thrilled passengers - hat ribbons.
Originally used only for sailors' caps, passengers used to bribe crew to get them. By the 1930s many lines were giving them out on Gala Night. The Italian Line kept up this fan-favorite practice until the end in the late 1970s.
Here is a 38" long hat ribbon from the AUGUSTUS. The ship name is embroidered in gold thread just like those in the pre-war days while the house flag is embroidered on each end. It was removed from the Italian Line offices when the line closed.
