  • Beschreibung: Am 19. Januar 1778 erreichte Captain Cook Atooi (Kauai) und blieb dort bis zum 23. Januar 1778. Am 21. Januar gingen Cook und John Webber von ihrem Ankerplatz am Strand ins Landesinnere nach Waimea an der Südküste von Kauai, um erhöhte Objekte zu untersuchen, die vom Schiff aus sichtbar waren. Sie fanden heraus, dass es sich um einen Morai handelte, einen Tempel ähnlich denen, die sie in Tahiti und anderen Südpazifikinseln bereits gesehen hatten. Der Tempel war knapp 6 Meter hoch und hatte eine dünne, hellgraue Stoffbahn als Bedeckung, welche wahrscheinlich eine zeremonielle Bedeutung hatte. Er stand auf einer Plattform und bestand aus Tausenden von grob behauenen Lavasteinen, die ohne Mörtel aufeinander gestapelt wurden. In der Mitte befand sich der schlanke Orakelturm, in welchem der Priester (kahuna) Rat suchte oder betete. Vor Häusern mit strohgedeckten Dächern, die mit Pili bedeckt waren - einem hohen Gras aus den Niederungen - standen geschnitzte Figuren mit Tapa und Blattopfern. In seinem Tagebuch notierte Cook besonders mehrere Steinobjekte, die er beobachtete, einschließlich dreier Stellen in der Mitte des Morai. Es wurde ihnen erzählt, dass dort drei Häuptlinge begraben wurden und davor gab es eine ovale Stelle, die sie "Tanga" nannten - tabu oder kapu auf Hawaiisch. Es wurde ihnen mitgeteilt, dass drei Menschenopfer dort begraben wurden, eins bei jeder Beisetzung eines Stammesführers. Cooks Tagebücher - 21. Januar 1778.

  • Description: On 19 January 1778, Captain Cook arrived at Atooi (Kauai) and remained there until 23 January 1778. On 21 January, Cook and John Webber went inland from their anchorage on the beach to Waimea on the south coast of Kauai to investigate raised objects visible from the ship. They found that it was a morai, a temple similar to those they had already seen in Tahiti and other South Pacific islands. The temple was just under 6 metres high and had a thin, light grey cloth covering, which probably had ceremonial significance. It stood on a platform and consisted of thousands of roughly hewn lava stones stacked on top of each other without mortar. In the centre was the slender oracle tower where the priest (kahuna) sought advice or prayed. In front of houses with thatched roofs covered with pili - a tall grass from the lowlands - stood carved figures with tapa and sheet offerings. In his diary, Cook particularly noted several stone objects he observed, including three sites in the middle of the Morai. They were told that three chiefs were buried there and in front of them was an oval spot they called "Tanga" - taboo or kapu in Hawaiian. They were told that three human sacrifices were buried there, one at each burial of a chief. Cook's diaries - 21 January 1778.
