Antique Chinese Silk Embroidery w/ Crane Toad Clam & Trinket; Up for sale is the silk embroidery panel embroidered with two trinket boxes for storing treasures, dated likely late 19th, early 20th century.

The silk embroidery panel in rectangular shape features two unique trinket boxes in hexagonal cylinder in brownish golden color over a blue background. The lid of the upper left box is embroidered with a crane whose feathers are widely and spirally spanned, whereas another lid put aside is a toad, leaving the box open to reveal its content. The front sides of the two boxes are also embroidered with interesting features including the bamboo leaves. plum flowers, pine leaves, separately, in combination with the clams and likely the plant lotus roots for connection and interaction. Inside of the clams are also gracefully embroidered. The whole artwork is well designed and delicate. The silk panel under the glass is wood framed and has a hanging wire at the back.

Crane, important in Chinese mythology, is associated with longevity, immortality, and wisdom, as it is closely connected with the Taoist immortals.

Toad, also known as Chan Chu, has the auspicious meaning of good fortune, wealth, and prosperity.

Clam, or clam shell, has symbolic value in many cultures. As clam shell holds the water of life, it may symbolize longevity, abundance, and prosperity. However, its main reference is to vulva and matrix as life receiving and giving.
