Antique 1906 WINCHESTER COLLEGE TRUSTY SERVANT Wooden Plaque Tablet Paperweight

This is a very Interesting and Unusual TRUSTY SERVANT Wooden Plaque / Tablet from Winchester College dated 1906.  The Tablet consists of a Plaque of Dark Wood - Possibly Oak - with Applied Card Image on one side and Rhyme on the reverse.  The Bottom of the Plaque has Dates and Writing Quite Deeply Inscribed into the wood on both sides.  I assume this originally belonged to a Pupil who attended Winchester College.  To give an idea of size the Tablet measures approx. 4 1/4" x 3" x 3/4" deep - or 10.5cm x 7.2cm 1.8cm.

The front of the Plaque has an Image of the Trusty Servant - with the wood underneath inscribed with the Dates " 1202 * 1906 "

The back of the plaque has a Descriptive Verse of the Trusty Servant in English and Latin.  The wood below is inscribed with the words " Wm Furneaux - Dean of Winchester.".

William Mordaunt Furneaux served as Dean of Winchester  between 1903 - 1909.

Update - I think I have managed to find out what the 1202 date relates to. It indicates the oak used to make this plaque was taken from ancient wood used as part of the original Norman foundations of Winchester Cathedral.  By 1905 the building was found to be in severe danger of collapse as it was sinking into the peat it was built upon.  In 1906 work began to stabilise the cathedral with a diver called William Walker working underwater - digging out the old foundations to shore-up the cathedral with concrete blocks , bricks and cement.  It is rather lovely that the plaque is made from an ancient part of the cathedral - presumably from beneath the central tower that was rebuilt in 1202.  William Furneaux the Dean of Winchester - whose name is on this plaque played a major role in overseeing the rescue work.

The Plaque is really very old and the image of the Trusty Servant on the front of the plaque has fading / discoloration from age and crackling to the varnish that make the image rather indistinct. Plaque has lots of signs of use and wear commensurate with age.  Please see photographs for details.

A very old and interesting Item of Winchester College History.
