Vintage Mah Jongg Set

Pung Chow
152 Tiles

Rarely available, this Pung Chow set has the much desired Mandarin Man Flowers.  Pung Chow was only in business for a few years in the early 1930's and yet made an exceptional set that has lasted for decades.  These tiles are made of pyralin.  A very hard early plastic made of celluloid.  The tops are a solid off-white.  The bottoms are solid black in color.  The tiles were hand cut, graphic pressed and painted.  Besides the flowers, the dragons are beloved. Pung Chow is the only manufacturer that I'm aware of that employs this dragon design.  All three dragons are the same graphic, with colors of red, green and silver.  The silver is the white dragon.  The Mandarin Man flowers in this set came with only the black outline.  There is a much, more rare set with red and green painted Mandarin Man flowers.  I hand painted these flower men to mimic and match the more rare set.  The one bam is diving heron.  The wan on the crak is a simplified style.

The set plays beautifully, as the tiles feel smooth and have a good weight. They fit easily in vintage and new racks.  The tiles are not a loud playing either on tables as Catalin sets.  It's a very elegant set.  The set came with 144 tiles.  Eight  more have been well matched, added, and stickered with joker stickers to make NMJL compliant.  The set is completed with a pair of vintage dice, and celluloid betting sticks.

36 Bams
36 Craks
36 Dots

12 Dragons

8 Jokers (stickered)
