Richard Earlom (1743 London - 1822 ebd.) nach Adriaen van der Werff (1659 Rotterdam - 1722 ebd.), Bathseba bringt Abishag zu David, 1779, Mezzotinto

  • Technik: Mezzotinto auf Büttenpapier, montiert auf Papier

  • Datierung: 1779

George Farington delint. / John Boydell excudit 1779 / Bathseba bringing Abishag to David, / Rich. Earlom sculpsit.". Darunter mit Bezeichnung und Publikationszeile "In the Cabinet at Houghton", "Published July 31. 1779 by John Boydell, Engraver in Cheapside London."

  • Schlagworte: Biblisches, Großbritannien, Figürlich, 1750-1799

  • Größe: Büttenpapier: 62.7 cm x 45.0 cm

  • Zustand: Sehr guter Zustand.

English Version:

Richard Earlom (1743 London - 1822 ibid.) after Adriaen van der Werff (1659 Rotterdam - 1722 ibid.), Bathseba bringt Abishag zu David, 1779, Mezzotint

  • Technique: Mezzotint on Laid paper, mounted on Paper

  • Date: 1779

  • Description: In the Tanakh, Abishag was a woman who cared for King David in Jerusalem during the last weeks of his life. She is mentioned in the first book of Kings as a "beautiful" girl. The medium of the mezzotint is ideal for reproducing the materiality of the various draperies and curtains as well as the strong contrasts between light and dark with such intensity and subtlety. The sheet, created in 1779, reproduces the painting "Sarah Brings Hagar to Abraham" by Adriaen van der Werff (1659-1722). Painted in 1696, it was acquired by Sir Robert Walpole (1676-1745), Britain's first Prime Minister, for his collection at Houghton Hall (Norfolk). Signed below the depiction "Vanderwerff pinxit. George Farington delint. / John Boydell excudit 1779 / Bathsheba bringing Abishag to David, / Rich. Earlom sculpsit.". Below with inscription and publication line "In the Cabinet at Houghton", "Published July 31. 1779 by John Boydell, Engraver in Cheapside London."

  • Keywords: 18th century, Figurative, Biblical, United Kingdom,

  • Size: Laid paper: 62.7 cm x 45.0 cm (24.7 x 17.7 in)
