  • Beschreibung: Sohn des holländischen Architekten Johann Christoph Gewin (geb. 1869). Geboren am 27. August 1900 in Obermenzing bei München, verbrachte M. U. M. Gewin seine Kindheit in Deutschland. das Institut für Stadtgeschichte, Frankfurt, verzeichnet Adressen in Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, München, Darmstadt. Die hier vorgelegten künstlerischen Arbeiten datieren ab 1918, in der Hauptsache von 1919 bis 1921. Sie nehmen architektonische Anregungen auf, während einer Hollandreise um 1920 deutlich auch von de Stijl empfangen. Ein Architekturstudium hat sich in Darmstadt angeschlossen, als Termin der Diplom-Hauptprüfung ist der 25. Mai 1925 genannt. Den Beruf begleitete die freie künstlerische Tätigkeit, der breiteren Öffentlichkeit mit einem illustrierten Buch vorgestellt, 1933 gerade noch unter dem spielerischen Titel einer Ost -Reise erschienen: "Ostermanns fahren nach Moskau", Verlag Boltze, Karlsruhe. Für die Nachkriegszeit sind zahlreiche Begegnungen mit Werken Gewins zu registrieren, vor allem Tuschzeichnungen und Aquarelle aus Spanien, Frankreich und Nordamerika. Eine Ausstellung im Akzisehaus Osnabrück 1975 gab Einblick in das Spätwerk, mit Katalog: MUM Gewin, Aquarelle und Zeichnungen aus Südfrankreich. Als Aufbruch zu einer neuen und dekorativen Kunst der Zeit um 1920 sind die hier vorgelegten Arbeiten aus dem Nachlass gegenüber zu stellen.

  • Description: Son of the Dutch architect Johann Christoph Gewin (born 1869). Born on 27 August 1900 in Obermenzing near Munich, M. U. M. Gewin spent his childhood in Germany. The Institut für Stadtgeschichte, Frankfurt, lists addresses in Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, Munich and Darmstadt. The artistic works presented here date from 1918 onwards, mainly from 1919 to 1921. They take up architectural ideas, clearly also received from de Stijl during a trip to Holland around 1920. He went on to study architecture in Darmstadt; the date of his main diploma examination is given as 25 May 1925. His profession was accompanied by freelance artistic work, presented to the wider public in an illustrated book, published in 1933 with the playful title of a journey to the East: "Ostermanns fahren nach Moskau" (Ostermann's journey to Moscow), published by Boltze, Karlsruhe. Numerous encounters with Gewin's works can be recorded for the post-war period, above all ink drawings and watercolours from Spain, France and North America. An exhibition at the Akzisehaus Osnabrück in 1975 provided an insight into his late work, with a catalogue: MUM Gewin, Watercolours and Drawings from the South of France. The works from the estate presented here are to be contrasted with the departure towards a new and decorative art of the period around 1920.
