  • Bezeichnung: Der Kupferstich wurde in roter Farbe hergestellt, die besonders im 18. Jahrhundert nur selten und für besondere Anlässe eingesetzt wurde. Unterhalb der Darstellung bezeichnet in Niederländisch und Latein. In der Platte signiert und mit Ortsangabe: "Pet. Schenk exc. Amst C. P.".

  • Beschreibung: Die Einnahme von Gibraltar fand zwischen dem 1. und 4. August 1704 während des Spanischen Erbfolgekrieges statt. Die Alliierten auf Seiten des Habsburger Thronprätendenten Karl nahmen Stadt und Festung ein. Peter Schenk der Ältere war ein deutscher Kupferstecher und Kartograf aus Elberfeld, heute zu Wuppertal. Um 1684 zog er nach Amsterdam und wurde Schüler von Gerard Valck, spezialisiert in Schabkunst; Reisen nach Leipzig und Berlin. Bis zu seinem Tod im Jahr 1718/19 gab er zahlreiche Karten und Bilder heraus.

  • Inscription: The copper engraving was produced in red colour, which was used only rarely and for special occasions, especially in the 18th century. Inscribed in Dutch and Latin below the image. Signed in the plate and with an indication of the place: "Pet. Schenk exc. Amst C. P.".

  • Date: c. 1712

  • Description: The capture of Gibraltar took place between 1 and 4 August 1704 during the War of the Spanish Succession. The Allies on the side of Charles, the Habsburg pretender to the throne, captured the city and fortress. Peter Schenk the Elder was a German engraver and cartographer from Elberfeld, now part of Wuppertal. Around 1684 he moved to Amsterdam and became a pupil of Gerard Valck, specialising in mezzotint; he travelled to Leipzig and Berlin. Until his death in 1718/19 he published numerous maps and pictures.

  • Condition: Rather good condition. With brownish colour stain in the centre; the right edge of the sheet shows clear soiling and damage, backed on verso. The image is only marginally affected and makes a good impression!
