Austria: Hesperus Artists' Association ("K?nstlerverein") annual dress ball token, 1868; struck in tin; maker-marked "J.S." - possibly Martin Sebald of the Drentwett die-sinking firm (Forrer vol. 5, pg.453); size: 29.5 x 33mm; weight: 6.7g. Obverse depicts a structure which may be the Dianabad-Saal (Diana-Bathhouse Hall) with legend in Austrian-German, "Costumirter Damen-Abend am 26 Janner 1868" (Women's Evening Ball), and artist's marks below image. On reverse a six pointed star with lyre and legend around edge, "K?nstler-Verein Hesperus Geg. ["gegr?ndet" - established] 1856." The Hesperus Artists' Association (also known as the Vienna Artists' Association) was in its day a prestigious and influential society, and held its musical "Hesperus Ball" annually around January or February.
