"Henrietta Szold"


Description:

The third of the Hanukkah coins is dedicated to Henrietta Szold on the occasion of the centenary of her birth in 1860. Henrietta Szold, founder of the Women's Zionist Organization of America, was a pioneer of Youth Aliya and active in other undertakings connected with the upbringing of unprivileged children . She is also credited with the founding of modern medical services in Israel.

 

Obverse:

A view of the Hadassah Medical Center in Ein Kerem, Jerusalem. In the upper left border, the word "Israel" in Hebrew and Arabic and the year 5721-1960 and lower right, , the face value in Hebrew, "1 Israel Lira"

 

Reverse:

A cloaked figure of a shepherdess tenderly enfolding a new-born lamb in her arms, symbolizing Henrietta Szold's contribution to Youth Aliya and her love and concern for frail children. To the left, Henrietta Szold in Hebrew characters, below, her year of birth and the mint year of the coin and beneath, the words "Hadassah - Youth Aliya" in Hebrew.
 

Edge: Smooth.

 

Mint Marks: On the reverse of the proof of the coin below the shepherdess on the bottom - rim centre appears the letter "mem"

Mintage: 16,781 coins.

Metal: Copper-Nickel, 32 mm.
