CIRCA 1850 SINGLE SIGNED THOS CLARK 3" X 2 3/4" BUTT HINGE, UNCOMMON (40872)

This is a single one piece butt hinge, circa 1840-1850 cast iron 3" x 2 3/4"  hinge by the Thos. Clark Co made in their English foundry and brought to America.

T. & C. Clark & Company Limited, based at Shakespeare Foundry, was founded in England in 1795 by Thomas and Charles Clark, and grew to be one of the largest iron foundries in Wolverhampton. They were from an old Wolverhampton family and became a large employer. Charles Clerk became mayor of Wolverhampton in 1860 after being a member of the Corporation since its formation as a municipal body. He became a Councillor, Alderman, and later Chief Magistrate.  His hinges are still found today in old farm houses in the Northeast and the as far west as Eastern Ohio. We have cleaned off all the old dirt, grime and paint to reveal the signature and the size in the castings.

I think it could be used for another 100 years, very nice condition.
