    Fratelli Alinari in Florenz sind das älteste noch bestehende fotografische Unternehmen der Welt: gegründet im Jahr 1852, gut zwei Jahrzehnte nachdem es dem französischen Erfinder Joseph Nicéphore Niépce gelungen war, ein Bild auf eine Zinnplatte zu bannen. Die Gebrüder Alinari waren Romualdo (1830-1891), Leopoldo (1832-1865) und Guiseppe (1836-1892). Leopoldo begann bereits in der Daguerreotypiezeit zu fotografieren und arbeitete für den Lithographen Guiseppe Bardi, mit dem er 1850 ein gemeinsames Fotoatelier gründete. 1854 kaufte Leopoldo die Anteile Bardis und mit seinen Brüdern zusammen entstand daraus das Atelier Fratelli Alinari. Es wurde eines der bedeutendsten italienischen Ateliers des 19. Jahrhunderts und später eines der größten Fotoarchive der Welt, das heute noch besteht.

Jahrhunderts reisten immer mehr Touristen aus bürgerlichen Kreisen nach Italien. Fotografien konnten damals nur mit hohem zeitlichem Aufwand und einer teuren, unhandlichen Apparatur entstehen. Umso dankbarer griffen viele Touristen auf die Arbeiten der professionellen Fotografenateliers vor Ort zurück, um den Zuhausegebliebenen ein Souvenir aus der Ferne mitzubringen oder sie als Erinnerungsstücke zu sammeln. Berühmt gewordene Fotografen wie Carlo Naya, Giorgio Sommer oder die Gebrüder Alinari lichteten die bekanntesten Sehenswürdigkeiten ihrer Heimatstädte ab und begaben sich selbst auf Reisen, um die beliebtesten Ziele ihrer Kunden zu fotografieren und als Albuminabzug anzubieten. Auch antike Kunstschätze wurden fotografisch aufgenommen und den Reisenden angeboten. Die hochwertigen Fotografien der Skulpturen und Fresken leisteten weiterhin einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Dokumentation der Kunstschätze und der Zugänglichkeit für Wissenschaftler aus ganz Europa, die zuvor auf Nachzeichnungen oder Stiche angewiesen waren, wenn sie nicht das Original selbst betrachten konnten.

    Fratelli Alinari in Florence are the oldest photographic company in the world still in existence: founded in 1852, a good two decades after the French inventor Joseph Nicéphore Niépce succeeded in capturing an image on a tin plate. The Alinari brothers were Romualdo (1830-1891), Leopoldo (1832-1865) and Guiseppe (1836-1892). Leopoldo began taking photographs in the daguerreotype era and worked for the lithographer Guiseppe Bardi, with whom he set up a joint photographic studio in 1850. In 1854, Leopoldo bought Bardi's shares and, together with his brothers, founded the Fratelli Alinari studio. It became one of the most important Italian studios of the 19th century and later one of the largest photo archives in the world, which still exists today.
