  • Beschreibung: Die Zeichnung entstand auf einer Reise, die den englischen Architekten, Kartographen, archäologischen Schriftsteller, Kunstsammler, Numismatiker und literarischen Übersetzer William Barnard Clarke zwischen 1838 und 1839 nach Frankreich und später im Jahr 1839 weiter nach Italien führte. Sie zeigt das beschauliche Treiben am Augustusbogen in Nîmes, in dessen Überresten einige Händler ihre Stände eingerichtet haben. Die Inschrift über den Bögen lautet "IMP CAESAR [D]IVI F AVGV[S]TVS [C]O[S] X[I] TRIBV [PO]TEST VIII [P]ORTAS MVROS COL DA[..]" (Kaiser Augustus, Sohn des göttlichen Caesar, Konsul zum 11. Mal, übt zum 8. Mal die Tribunenmacht aus und gab der Kolonie die Tore und Mauern.)

  • Description: The drawing was made on a journey that took the English architect, cartographer, archaeological writer, art collector, numismatist and literary translator William Barnard Clarke to France between 1838 and 1839 and later on to Italy in 1839. It shows the tranquil hustle and bustle of the Arch of Augustus in Nîmes, in the remains of which some merchants have set up their stalls. The inscription above the arches reads "IMP CAESAR [D]IVI F AVGV[S]TVS [C]O[S] X[I] TRIBV [PO]TEST VIII [P]ORTAS MVROS COL DA[...]" (Emperor Augustus, son of the divine Caesar, consul for the 11th time, exercising tribunician power for the 8th time and giving the gates and walls to the colony).
