LARRY BECKER  Greater Magic Library volume 16 --

published by Twin Cities Magic undated, but circa 2009   (footage from the late 1980's or early 1990's, from the original Steven's Greater Magic Video Library)

I have been a fan of Larry Becker's mental magic ever since I first read his World of Super Mentalism book back in the late 1970's.   His effects are practical for the performer, and entertaining for the audience.   One this DVD he teaches six such effects, and also does a "performance only" of his famous "Russian Roulette" routine.

I was surprise (very pleasantly) to find that the items on this DVD are ones that I did not already know from Becker's books.  (And I think I have all his books).   Other than "Grin and Bear it" which is in hs Stunners book, I think the other five items are only available on this DVD.  (I may be wrong about that, but they seemed new to me, and so I enjoyed being puzzled and fooled by a number of them!)

I really want you to buy this excellent DVD, so I will spend a lot of time describing this one...

The opening effect ("Making Time") is typical Becker.  One spectator chooses any of six different brands of wrist watches, and when the performer removes his watch and shows it, another spectator verifies that it is the same brand.   Very straight forward, no difficult secret "moves", and very puzzling to the audience.     NOTE:  This one uses a particular kind of watch, and since this DVD footage is about 30 years old, I searched online to see if that specific watch was still available.   (And because it is a watch from 30 years ago, I thought I had a good chance of finding one for a few bucks!)   Well, the watch is fairly easy to find, but turns out it is still a very popular watch, because it costs about $250 in the listings I found.   Oh well, good mental magic sometimes costs a lot.  View the performance of this effect, and after it fools you, you may very well decide that it is worth getting one of these watches!

PK2000 is Becker's very puzzling version of the Parade of Kings, given a context of psychokenesis.   Four Kings are shown to the spectator, who puts them in his pocket.   He reaches into his own pocket and removes any one of the Kings, holding it facedown between his hands.   The mental magi shows another packet of four Kings, and he holds them all facedown.  After the spectator concentrates on his own King, the magi's packet jumps slightly (the PK effect), and is spread to show that the matching King had turned faceup.     The "PK" context is a bit of stretch, but the method (which uses NO gaffed cards!) is very clean and will probably fool you.  So of course it will fool your audiences.

Date-ecation -- perhaps my favorite on the DVD, and one I immediately added to my own performances.  Five half dollars are dropped out of a small "squeeze" coin purse.   The coins are place on the table with the date-side downward.   The spectator mixes the five coins and chooses any one (no force).   The chosen coin is placed in the coin purse for safe keeping, and the spectator looks at the dates on the other five coins.  All dates are different.   The coin purse is squeezed open again, showing just the one chosen coin and a piece of paper inside.  These are both dumped into the spectator's hand.  She looks at the date on the coin -- it is different from all the other coins, but it is a perfect match for the prediction on the paper ("You will choose the coin from 1977").

The Mark -- a very good presentation for a dealer item.  Spectator chooses any card from a faceup jumbo deck.  The rest of the deck's backs are shown to be normal, but the freely chosen card (from the faceup deck) has a big "X" on the back.    You will have to spend about $40 to get the necessary deck, but it is money well spent.

Psy Quick -- a very clever "peek wallet" routine, using a wallet you can make up for yourself.  The design (again, typical Becker) is very simple and innocent looking, but very deceptive.  You take a credit card from the wallet, and show it has a sticker label on the back.   The spectator writes a number froom 1 to 1000 on the sticker -- (the amount she wants to charge on your credit card!)   The credit card is slipped back into the wallet with obviously no chance for the mentalist to see the sticker.   When the written thought is inside the wallet (still unseen by you), the wallet can be shown all-around since it is truly opaque.  A natural and motivated action (of taking out a business card from the other side of the wallet) allows you to know the written number.    My new favorite peek wallet.

"Grin and Bear It" is a funny routine where a spectator can win one of six valuable prizes -- she ends up missing all the very expensive prizes but wins a Teddy Bear.   (Ted Lesley also has a Teddy Bear routine... can't remember whether Lesley or Becker did this first.)    Entertaining and an will endear you to the audience  :-)    This one uses another dealer item to ensure that the spectator gets the Bear prize, but the entertaining routine could be adapted to the many other ways we mentalists have for making sure things end up the way we want  :-)

The DVD also contains a performance of Becker's danger effect -- Russian Roulette.  No explanation for that one, but fun to watch it.   The DVD case label also lists "Spirit Trickery" but I guess that was an effect from another DVD or a routine that did not make the final DVD -- it is not on the DVD so don't write me and ask where that trick is.    Only Larry becker and Joe Stevens know the answer to that one!  :-)

In case it is not obvious by now, I really think you should own this DVD if you want some good mental magic to add to your repertoire.

Retail on this DVD $35.  But you can get it here for a lot less!
