The Celica 1600GT, which debuted in October 1970, was being developed for racing from the development stage. A front spoiler, rear spoiler, headlamp cover, and over fender whose shape was determined by computer and wind tunnel experiments have been added. The 2T-G engine was powered up with a dry sump, and the suspension arms were completely redesigned to create a strong touring car that could compete with its rivals. The Celica 1600GT first entered the race in November 1971 at the Japan All-Star Race held at Fuji. It was a spectacular debut, monopolizing 1st to 3rd place in the TS-b class in which 3 cars entered. Entering 1972, the Celica continued to make strides, winning the touring car class at the All Japan Suzuka Auto Race in March. In April of the same year, at Raced Nippon held at Fuji, it demonstrated its potential to hold onto the top ranks, winning the overall victory over the Skyrun GT-R and Fairlady 240Z.
At the Japanese Grand Prix held at Fuji on May 3rd, the Celica almost dominated the 1st, 2nd and 4th places, and the Corolla Levin finished in 3rd place, showing Toyota's overwhelming strength. rice field.
