The clutch allows you to adjust the height of the top high hat in relation to the bottom one so you can choose to have space between the cymbals which allows you to use the high hat pedal to play the high hat cymbals without using a stick. The clutch also allows you to "close" the high hat cymbals and play them with sticks.
