You are bidding for a Chinese Imari Gilt Porcelain Charger. Unmarked on the base, but typical two spray decoration and white creamy porcelain, Kangxi Period (1662-1722).

 'Decorated in imari, with a finely painted diaper border scrollwork with a tobacco leaf at the centre and peonies.'.


"Tobacco Leaf" and its many variations constitute a family of motifs that were created in China and, starting in 1765, were used for a century to decorate porcelains destined for export to Europe (mainly Portugal and probably England) and Brazil. The total number of Tobacco Leaf and Pseudo motifs in existence is unknown.
  • Condition: GOOD - visible damage, historically repaired and professionally stapled across the centre plate (approx. 26cm long) and side border (30cm long), fritting around the rim, light scratches and loss of gilding. Otherwise, it is in good condition.
