The 2019–20 season proved to be a challenging
chapter for Toulouse Football Club, marking their 49th season in existence and
the 17th consecutive season in the top tier of French football. Beyond domestic
league commitments, Toulouse also took part in the Coupe de France and the
Coupe de la Ligue during this season, covering the period from July 1, 2019, to
June 30, 2020.
Unfortunately, Toulouse faced a disastrous
league campaign, accumulating only one point in their last 18 matches. This
dismal performance led to the team's relegation to Ligue 2, marking the first
time since 2003 that Toulouse found themselves outside the top flight.
The season saw a change in leadership as
President Olivier Sadran, Head Coach Alain Casanova (until October 10), Antoine
Kombouaré (from October 14 to January 5), and Denis Zanko (from January 6)
navigated the challenges. The home matches were played at the Stadium de
Toulouse.
In terms of league performance, Toulouse
finished 20th, leading to their relegation. Their journey in the Coupe de
France ended in the Round of 64, while in the Coupe de la Ligue, they reached
the Round of 16. The top goalscorers for the season included Efthimis
Koulouris, Max Gradel, and Yaya Sanogo, each scoring four goals.
Attendance figures varied throughout the
season, with the highest home attendance recorded at 23,002 during the match
against Marseille on November 24, 2019, and the lowest at 10,177 against Angers
on September 25, 2019. The average home league attendance stood at 14,647.
The biggest win for Toulouse during the
season was a 2–0 victory against Amiens, but they suffered a significant defeat
with a 4–0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain.
Established in 1970, Toulouse Football Club
has been a prominent figure in French football. Currently competing in Ligue 1,
the club has its home at the Stadium de Toulouse. Notably, Toulouse holds the
Coupe de France title and has clinched the Ligue 2 championship on three
occasions. Their European endeavors include participation in the UEFA Champions
League in 2007, and they are set to feature in the 2023–24 UEFA Europa League
after winning the Coupe de France in the previous year.
The presidency of Toulouse FC transitioned to Damien Comolli, succeeding Olivier Sadran, who took charge following the club's bankruptcy in 2001, leading to relegation to the Championnat National. Toulouse has served as a launching pad for notable players, including World Cup-winning goalkeeper Fabien Barthez, and international strikers André-Pierre Gignac and Martin Braithwaite.
