About This Concept Art

1981 acrylic water color painting that was a concept presented to NASA showing the location of the communications equipment used to communicate between the space shuttle, Earth, aircraft and astronauts performing Extra-vehicular Activity in outer space. The space shuttle communication system was highly complex. The Orbiter Communications and Tracking System must interface with not only the NASA Spaceflight Tracking and Data Network, but also the NASA Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System, the USAF Satellite Control Facility, other satellites, crew members performing extravehicular activities (EVA), the FAA Air Traffic Control (ATC) voice communications, and FAA and military air navigational aids. This painting was published in an issue of Air & Space Magazine.

Moon Man Publishing's Founder Alan Scalone's father, Sam Scalone, worked with James Burns at RCA on the Apollo Moon Mission Projects. Sam as one of the mechanical engineers and James as the concept artist worked hand in hand with the engineering team to invent and design the equipment that would ultimately be built and used on the Apollo Moon landing missions and other NASA space programs.   

These drawings were used in the top secret meetings where NASA decided to approve or not approve funding to build the equipment seen in the artwork. The outcome of these meetings and James's drawings determined how man would go to the Moon, the equipment they would use, and the very creation of the communications equipment that allowed the world to witness man’s first steps on the Moon.
