  • Beschreibung: Im improvisierten Trockendock an der Küste des Meeres bei Bordeaux liegt ein großes Segelschiff auf der Seite und wird kielgeholt. Statt der in der Seefahrt lange gebräuchlichen Strafe des "Kielholens", ist hier die intensive Reinigung des Unterwasserschiffes gemeint. Der Rumpf der hölzernen Segelschiffe setzte sich im Laufe der Zeit mit allerhand Muscheln zu, die die Geschwindigkeit des durch das Wasser gleitenden Rumpfes beeinträchtigten. Hier deutlich zu sehen ist die Gruppe der Männer bei der Reinigung des Schiffsrumpfes.

  • Description: In the improvised dry dock on the coast of the sea near Bordeaux, a large sailing ship lies on its side and is keel hauled. Instead of the punishment of "keelhauling", which has long been customary in seafaring, this refers to the intensive cleaning of the underwater hull. Over time, the hull of the wooden sailing ships became clogged with all kinds of shells, which impaired the speed of the hull as it glided through the water. Here you can clearly see the group of men cleaning the hull of the ship.
