1908 GRAND PRIX BENZ 120 H.P.
The German Benz Company built three cars to form the works team for the 1908 French Grand Prix at Dieppe, and this is one of them. The drivers were Victor Hémery, René Hanriot and Fritz Erle, who came second, third and seventh respectively - a very satisfactory result for a Company taking part in its first important race. The cars then went over to America, where Hémery again had some success (two second places) in the Savannah races of 1908 and 1910, and they were also driven by the redoubtable American, Barney Oldfleid.
Two of the team are known to survive, and this is the one which was driven by Erie at Dieppe and which competed at Savannah. The o.h.v. engine has four cylinders cast in pairs (155 X 165 mm.) and a capacity of 12,400 ccs. There is a high tension magneto, a four-speed gearbox, and transmission is by side chains.
