This hat dates most likely from the 1870's-1880's. It is constructed of a taffeta-like fabric, satin, velvet, and ostrich feathers. Attached long velvet ribbons were for tying under the chin to keep the perched hat in place. Could have been worn as a mourning hat/bonnet. Its provenance: I was thrilled to find it 20+ years ago in a farmer's outbuilding along a rural road in Michigan. Top quality materials and meticulous craftsmanship made this to survive a well kept relic.
